Viet Thanh Nguyen is the author of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Sympathizer and 4 other books. His honors include the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, Edgar Award for the Best First Novel from the Mystery Writers of America, the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction from the ALA, A Gold Medal in First Fiction from the California Book Awards, a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, and the Asian/Pacific American Literature Award from the Pacific American Librarian Association. He is a frequent op-ed writer for the New York Times. The Sympathizer will be an HBO TV series. In the fall of 2023, he published A Man of Two Faces: A Memoir, A History, A Memorial.

Viet Nguyen was born in Vietnam. As a 4-year-old he and his family immigrated to Ft Indiantown Gap, PA US in 1975 after the fall of Saigon. He then moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and then to San Jose, California where he attended elementary and high school and his family ran a Vietnamese grocery store. He attended UCLA and then received his PhD in English and Ethnic Studies from UC, Berkeley. He is the Aerol Arnold Chair of English and Professor of English and American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California.
