Tilden Park Steam Train Hike

Please join HCSV, HCSF, and YCSV for a hike in Tilden Regional Park, Berkeley/Orinda.

Tilden Regional Park is a 2,079-acre regional park in the East Bay between the Berkeley Hills and San Pablo Ridge. Its steep valleys and dense stands of timber offer a rare wilderness experience so close to the city.

We will explore the park in a small group on a moderately difficult 5.5 mile hike with about 1200 feet elevation gain on the Lupine, Big Spring, and Seaview Trails to Vollmer Peak. This 3 hour hike through Tilden’s high ridges and peaks gives wide views over the San Francisco Bay and inland towards Mount Diablo and the Briones Valley.

After the hike we will rejuvenate ourselves by riding the Redwood Valley Railway (Tilden Steam Train), a 15″ gauge miniature railway that offers steam train rides along a scenic ridge on a scaled-down steam train. Cost is $3.50 per ride or $14 for 5 rides. Please bring enough water, snacks, hat, sun block and appropriate clothing and footwear. This hike is partially covered and some poison oak is present. Important: For your safety this event will be limited in capacity and limited to alumni and their guests who are COVID-19 vaccinated. Please bring masks to wear during breaks/when socializing with other attendees, and remember to maintain 6′ of physical separation at all times.

Outdoor events can be quite popular, and we frequently end up with people on the waitlist. To allow as many people to attend as possible, please RSVP only if you definitely plan on attending. If unforeseen circumstances make you unable to attend, please let the event organizer know, so we can give your spot to someone on the waitlist.

**MEETING & ENDING POINT**: Tilden Park Steam Train at 2481 Grizzly Peak Blvd, Orinda, CA 94563. Meet near the restrooms in the OVERFLOW parking lot (go past main parking lot). There is additional parking on the road to the Fire Station.
